Hearst Memorial Mining Building, UC Berkeley, California

Client: Andre Division, Silvertown UK Limited.

Building: Isolation retrofit of an historic building on the University of California at Berkeley campus.

System: 136 high-damping rubber bearings + 24 viscous dampers.

Scope: SIE provided technical support to the isolation bearing manufacturer for the design of the isolation bearings and all aspects of the bearing testing, including development of test protocols, test data analysis and preparation of technical submittals.

Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles, California

Client: Nabih Youssef & Associates; Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Building: A new 3000+ seat cathedral designed by Jose Rafael Moneo.

System: Approx. 200 HDR and slider bearings.

Scope: SIE provided technical support to the structural engineer for the preliminary and detailed design of the isolation system, including linear and nonlinear analyses; preparation of the technical aspects of RFP documents; and technical support during bearing production and testing.

Public Safety Building, Berkeley, California

Client: City of Berkeley, Berkeley, California.

Building: A new 65,000 sq.ft. building housing police, fire, 911 emergency communications, and jail facilities.

System: 27 lead-rubber and 5 slider bearings.

Scope: SIE,developed the structural and isolation system design for the design/build procurement. Subsequent activities included structural and isolation design review of the final design and isolation bearing testing inspection.

Isolation Retrofit of the Golden Gate Bridge North Viaduct, San Francisco, California

Clients: Signet Testing Laboratories, Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District.

Scope: SIE provided testing inspection services and design review services for lead-rubber isolation bearings for the seismic isolation retrofit of the North Viaduct approach to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Isolation Retrofit of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, San Diego, California

Client: Forell/Elsesser Engineers, San Francisco, California.

Bridge: An existing 1.3-mile viaduct spanning between San Diego and Coronado Island.

System: Approx. 84 isolation bearings + 20 viscous dampers.

Scope: SIE performed a performance assessment review of the elastomeric isolation bearing designs developed by the structural engineer.

Isolation Retrofit of the Los Angeles City Hall, Los Angeles, California

Client: Nabih Youssef & Associates; City of Los Angeles.

Building: An existing 28-story building, approx. 910,000 sq.ft.

Bearings: 475 high-damping rubber bearings and 58 slider bearings.

Dampers: 52 fluid viscous dampers for the isolation system and 12 fluid viscous dampers for the superstructure.

Scope: SIE provided technical support to the structural engineer for the preliminary and detailed design of the isolation system, including elastomeric and slider bearings and fluid viscous dampers; technical support with linear and nonlinear analyses; preparation of the technical aspects of the RFPs for both the bearings and the dampers; technical support during bearing and damper prototype and production and testing

Sacramento River Bridge, Rio Vista, California

Client: SOH & Associates, San Francisco, California.

Bridge: Retrofit of a 2900-ft. long steel bridge with 300-ft. lift-span.

System: 28 lead-rubber bearings and 8 fluid viscous dampers.

Scope: SIE provided technical support to SOH&A for the nonlinear analysis, design and specification of the isolation system scheme, and for fluid viscous dampers used to control uplift of the lift-span towers.

LAC+USC Medical Center Replacement Project Base Isolation, Los Angeles, California

Client: Andre, Silvertown (UK) Limited, Burton-on-Trent, England.

Building: A new 350,000 sq.ft. steel frame Diagnostic and Treatment Building.

System: Approx. 100 high-damping rubber bearings.

Scope: SIE is providing technical support to Andre through all phases of the project, from materials characterization through to prototype and production bearing testing and on-site installation.

Caltrans/CHP Traffic Management Center, San Diego, California

Client: Bridgestone Industrial Rubber Products, (USA), Inc.

Building: A new 2-story, 40,000 sq.ft. steel frame building.

System: 40 high-damping rubber bearings.

Scope: SIE provided review and approval of the isolation bearing design, prototype and production test plans, and completed test reports.

Inchon LNG Receiving Terminal, South Korea

Client: Daelim Industrial Co., Ltd., Seoul, South Korea.

Structures: Three new LNG tanks, each with a storage capacity of 100,000 m3.

System: 1176 high-damping rubber bearings (392 per tank).

Scope: SIE provided technical support to Daelim in reviewing the design of the isolators, the results of the reduced-scale prototype tests, and evaluating compliance of the test results with the design specifications.
